Pools are less common in Kvarner than the sheer number of stays suggests, so if one is on your list, it pays to filter for it early and know where to look.

Along the Opatija riviera you mostly swim from concrete platforms and rocks, on Krk and Cres many coves are pebble or rock that drop off quickly, and early and late in the season the sea in the northern Adriatic can feel fresh. A pool gives young children and less confident swimmers an easy alternative, lets you stay in a village away from the beach without missing out, and makes the evenings more relaxed after a day of sightseeing or a ferry trip.
Most of our pool stays in Kvarner are on Krk, which also has the largest number of holiday homes overall and is reached by bridge, so arrival is simple. Rab comes next, followed by the Crikvenica and Opatija rivieras and the island of Pag. Many are family houses divided into apartments, where the pool is shared, while detached holiday homes in quieter villages are more likely to have a private one. Only a small share of Kvarner stays have a pool at all, so the best ones go early for July and August.
Before booking, check whether the pool is private or shared, how big it is and whether it is fenced if you have toddlers. If you are travelling in May, June or September, ask when the pool opens and whether it is heated, because an unheated pool can be as cool as the sea. Pools on the islands are not always large, so look at the photos and the listed size if you want to swim lengths. Also check where the pool sits in relation to the bedrooms and the neighbours, as a shared pool can be lively on summer afternoons. Towels for the pool are not always provided, so ask.
