Search pet-friendly stays in KvarnerCrikvenica opened Croatia's first official dog beach, Podvorska, in 2010. It is a pebble beach of about 170 metres by the fishing harbour south of the centre, free to use, with dog showers and Monty's Dog Beach Bar, which serves treats for dogs as well as drinks for owners. Nearby Novi Vinodolski has a dog-friendly cove at Mala Draga, and on the Opatija riviera dogs can swim at Punta Kolova, between Opatija and Ičići, and below Villa Frappart. On Krk, there are dog-friendly areas at Vela plaža in Baška, Kijac in Njivice, Mala Krasa in Punat, Mala Javna near Vrbnik, Punta Šilo and Soline bay by Čižići. Rab's tourist board says nearly every beach on the island has a dog-friendly section, and Monty's has a second dog beach and bar at Artić in Banjol. Lošinj has dog beaches with waste bins in Čikat bay by the Annunziata church, Srebrna bay, Kovčanje opposite Mali Lošinj harbour, Valdarke bay and Artatore, which also has a dog shower.
Getting to the islands usually means a ferry. On Jadrolinija ferries, dogs must wear a muzzle and be on a lead, larger dogs over 8 kg travel on the open deck, and small pets can travel in the lounge in a carrier. Other operators set their own rules, so check before you travel. From another EU country your dog needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination and an EU pet passport. Hosts differ on size limits and fees, so confirm before booking.
