Tučepi is built around one long beach: almost four kilometres of pebble shore and promenade, a few minutes south of Makarska but with a noticeably slower evening rhythm.
Search stays in TučepiTučepi was once a string of hamlets on the slopes of Biokovo, each named after the families who lived there. The seaside resort grew later along the shore below them, and the old upper village, Gornji Tučepi, is still up the hill with its church of St Anthony. Closer to the sea, in the Kraj area, stands the small medieval church of St George. The Tučepi tourist board describes it as one of the quietest destinations on the riviera, and that is a fair summary.
It suits families above all, and couples who want long walks rather than late nights. The whole beach is backed by a promenade, so you can stroll between cafés, ice cream and water sports, and continue on foot to Makarska. A few large hotels, including the Jadran, whose complex is listed as protected heritage, sit among private houses and apartments.
Most of our Tučepi stays are within a couple of hundred metres of the beach. The resort is spread out, so pick your section: the middle around Kamena is most convenient for shops and restaurants, Kraj and the Makarska end put you closest to town, and the Podgora end towards Dračevac is quietest. Some houses stand higher on the slope with bigger views and a longer walk back.
Beaches
Tučepi main beach
The main beach runs almost four kilometres along the resort under pine and tamarisk trees, in sections known by local names such as Kraj, Kamena and Slatina. Fine pebble, shallow water near the shore, loungers, beach bars and water sports all along. It rarely feels as packed as Makarska.
Kamena
The central stretch, a short paved walk from the middle of Tučepi, is popular with families for its showers, toilets and easy snacks and bars behind the beach. Several apartment houses overlook it.
Dračevac
At the eastern edge towards Podgora, Dračevac is a quieter pebble beach backed by pines, with a small café bar. Families swim in the shallow water at one end, while a small section at the other end is used by naturists.
Getting there and around
Tučepi is on the D8 coastal road just south-east of Makarska; from Split Airport allow around an hour and a half. Buses on the coastal line stop on the main road above the resort, so expect a walk downhill to the sea. Makarska's bus station and the ferry to Brač are a few minutes' drive away, or a longer walk along the shore. Parking is generally easier than in Makarska, though still limited near the beach in August.

Tips before you book
- The resort is long and thin; check how far along the beach a listing is if you want to walk to restaurants.
- Nugal beach, between Tučepi and Makarska, is reached on foot and is mainly naturist.
- Biokovo Nature Park rises directly behind the resort, with hiking paths and the Skywalk within reach by car.
- Water shoes make the pebbles easier for small children.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tučepi or Makarska better for families?
Tučepi is usually the easier choice with young children. The beach is long, with shallow water near the shore, and the evenings are calm. Makarska has more restaurants and nightlife but is louder and more crowded in summer. From Tučepi you can walk or take a short drive into Makarska whenever you want the busier atmosphere.
Can you walk from Tučepi to Makarska?
Yes. The seafront promenade continues from Tučepi towards Makarska, and the walk is flat and pleasant, though long if you start from the Podgora end of the resort. If you do not fancy the return on foot, buses run along the main road and the drive takes only a few minutes.
Is Tučepi quiet at night?
Mostly, yes. There are beach bars, cafés and some live music in summer, but nothing like Makarska's clubs. That makes it a good base if you want restful nights and still like the option of going out a few minutes away.
