The Lungomare path runs for about 12 km along the water, linking the riviera's places. Volosko, at the Rijeka end, is a former fishing village with a tiny harbour and some of the area's best restaurants. Ičići and Ika are small and relaxed, with a marina at Ičići, and Lovran has a compact medieval old town. Beyond it, Medveja has one of the largest beaches on the riviera, in a bay backed by pine woods.
Stay in Opatija for convenience and evening life, in Volosko for food, and in Lovran or Ika for a calmer base. The riviera suits couples and older travellers, and anyone visiting out of season. Many stays are on the hillside with sea views, so check how far you will walk back up from the shore. Parking is scarce in the centre, so it is worth filtering for stays that include it.
Beaches
Slatina, Opatija
The central town beach, made up of concrete platforms and small pebble areas below the promenade, with cafés, sunbeds and easy ladders into deep, clear water. A fenced dog beach with steps into the sea and a shower sits near the Colosseum building.
Črnikovica, Volosko
A pebble beach just outside Volosko, handy if you are staying in the village or on the Opatija side. It is smaller and more local in feel than the town beaches, and a short walk from Volosko's harbour restaurants.
Medveja
A long pebble beach in a bay about 2 km beyond Lovran, backed by pine woods. It has far more space than the platforms in Opatija, plus restaurants and sports facilities, so it is the riviera's best pick for a full family beach day.
Getting there and around
Rijeka airport, on the island of Krk, is roughly 40 km from Opatija by road, and Pula, Trieste and Ljubljana are other options. Opatija is about 15 minutes' drive from Rijeka, and buses run regularly along the coast between Rijeka, Opatija and Lovran. Parking in the centre of Opatija is tight and often paid, so a stay with its own parking is a real advantage if you arrive by car.
