Croatia Must-Visit Places — things to do in Pula, Rovinj, Kvarner, Zadar & Nin, Šibenik, Split, Makarska and Dubrovnik (FindStayAI infographic)

Pula

The Roman city at the tip of Istria. Walk around and inside the Pula Arena, then cross town to the Temple of Augustus on the old Forum. Under the streets runs Zerostrasse, a network of tunnels dug before the First World War. Leave the old town through the Arch of the Sergii, and save a day for Cape Kamenjak, the wild, protected tip of the peninsula south of Premantura. Where to stay: Pula, Medulin.

Rovinj

Climb the bell tower of St Euphemia for the view over the old town and the islands, then wander down Grisia, the steep street of artists and galleries. Golden Cape (Zlatni rt) is a pine forest park with coves for swimming, a short walk from the centre. End the day on the old harbour for the sunset, and take a boat to the islands off the town. Read our Rovinj guide.

Opatija and Kvarner

Opatija has welcomed guests since the 19th century. Walk the Lungomare, the seafront path from Volosko to Lovran, and the gardens of Villa Angiolina. On Krk, Vela plaža in Baška is one of the longest beaches in the region. The town of Rab is known for its four bell towers above the sea, and on Lošinj the pine-shaded promenade leads to Čikat bay. See Opatija, Krk, Rab, Lošinj and the Kvarner guide.

Zadar and Nin

In Zadar, listen to the Sea Organ at sunset and watch the Greeting to the Sun light up beside it. The Roman Forum lies next to the round church of St Donatus. Twenty minutes north, the island town of Nin has the tiny Church of the Holy Cross, often called the smallest cathedral in the world, and the shallow sandy Queen’s Beach next to the lagoon known for its healing mud. Inland, kayak the Zrmanja canyon. Read the Zadar guide, the page on Nin and our list of stays near sandy beaches around Zadar.

Šibenik

Šibenik has two UNESCO sites: the stone Cathedral of St James and the sea fortress of St Nicholas at the entrance to the channel. Summer concerts are held at St Michael’s Fortress above the old town. The Krka waterfalls (Skradinski buk) are a short drive away, and the viewpoint at Kamenjak looks over Vrana lake, Croatia’s largest natural lake. See the Šibenik guide and Pirovac.

Split

Start in Diocletian’s Palace and its Peristyle, then walk out to the palm-lined Riva. Marjan hill is the city’s forest park, with coves on its far side. At Bačvice beach locals play picigin, a splashy keep-the-ball-up game in the shallows. From the harbour, ferries and catamarans leave for Brač, Hvar and Vis. Read the Split guide and Vis.

Makarska Riviera

Step onto the Biokovo Skywalk, a glass platform high above the coast. Punta Rata in Brela is one of the best-known pebble beaches in Croatia. In the evening, stroll the Makarska waterfront. Further north near Omiš, go rafting on the Cetina, and take the ferry from Makarska to Sumartin on Brač. See the Makarska Riviera guide, Brela and Makarska town.

Dubrovnik

Walk the City Walls, then cross to Lovrijenac, the fortress on its own rock outside the walls. The cable car up Srđ gives the classic view down on the old town. An hour north, eat oysters in Ston beside Europe’s longest defensive walls, and continue to Korčula and the vineyards of Pelješac. Read our Dubrovnik guide.
