Days here tend to follow a slow rhythm: a morning in a hill town or market, lunch at a konoba, an afternoon by the pool and, when you feel like it, a drive to the coast for a swim before dinner.
Most of our stays here are stone houses and villas with a private pool, which makes up for being inland, and many welcome pets. The best area depends on your plans: the north around Motovun and Grožnjan is close to Poreč and Novigrad, while Svetvinčenat and Žminj are handy for Rovinj, Pula and the south. Pazin, in the middle, is practical for shops and road links.
Beaches
West coast beaches near Poreč and Novigrad
From Motovun and Grožnjan, the nearest swimming is on the west coast around Poreč and Novigrad, typically well under an hour's drive. Expect pebble coves and paved terraces shaded by pines, with plenty of facilities in the resort areas.
Rovinj and Vrsar
From Svetvinčenat or Žminj, Rovinj's rocky coves and the Zlatni Rt forest park are a short drive away. The water is exceptionally clear, and there are quieter spots along the coast between Rovinj and Vrsar.
Rabac on the east coast
From Pazin or southern villages, the pebble bays of Rabac, such as Girandella and Maslinica, are another option. They face the Kvarner Gulf and the island of Cres, with very clear water and well-equipped beaches in summer.
Getting there and around
A car is essential in Central Istria. The Istrian Y motorway runs through the middle of the peninsula, with an exit near Pazin, so most villages are quick to reach. Pula airport is under an hour from much of the area, and Trieste works well for the north around Buzet and Grožnjan. Almost every country house has private parking, but hill towns such as Motovun and Grožnjan are car-free inside the walls, so you park below and walk up.
