The island you can drive straight onto: a bridge from the mainland, an airport on the island itself, and a string of very different towns from walled Krk to the long beach at Baška.
Search stays on KrkKrk is big enough that where you stay shapes the whole holiday. Krk town, on the south-west coast, has a walled old centre, a cathedral and a busy harbour front, with pebble beaches a short walk away. Punat sits on a sheltered bay next door, and from its harbour small boats cross to Košljun, a wooded islet with a Franciscan monastery and quiet paths among the olive trees. Both work well if you want restaurants and shops within walking distance.
On the north-west side, Malinska and Njivice are relaxed family resorts with pine-shaded promenades, and they are the closest bases to the bridge and the airport. Vrbnik stands on a cliff above the east coast, a tight knot of stone lanes surrounded by the vineyards of Žlahtina, the local white wine. Baška, at the southern end, is the lively summer choice, set between bare hills and its long town beach, with walking trails climbing up behind the village.
Krk suits families, couples on a short break and anyone arriving by car. Pick Malinska or Njivice for easy logistics, Krk town or Punat for a bit of everything, Baška for the beach and Vrbnik for peace and good food. Beaches
Vela plaža, Baška
The island's best-known beach: a wide sweep of smooth pebbles in front of the town, with shallow water that suits children. It has every facility along its length and gets crowded in high summer, so arrive early or walk to the smaller coves beyond the headlands.
Porporela, Krk town
A pebble and stone beach about five minutes' walk west of the old town, below the town walls. It is handy for a swim between sightseeing and meals, and has cafés and summer activities close by. Expect company in July and August.
Oprna, near Stara Baška
A wild bay of pebbles and sand on the south of the island, reached on foot by rough paths through the karst or by boat. There are no facilities, so bring water, shade and good shoes. The effort keeps the crowds away.
Getting there and around
Rijeka airport is on Krk, near Omišalj, a short drive from Malinska and Njivice. From Rijeka or Zagreb you drive over the Krk bridge, which has been toll-free since 2020, so no ferry is needed. Baška is the furthest point from the bridge, so allow extra time in summer traffic. A car is the easiest way to move between towns, and most stays include parking. From Valbiska, ferries run on to Cres and to Lopar on Rab.

Tips before you book

No. Krk is linked to the mainland by a road bridge near Rijeka, and it has been free to cross since 2020. That makes it the easiest Kvarner island to reach by car. You only need a ferry if you want to continue from Valbiska to Cres or to Lopar on Rab.
Is Krk good for families?
Yes. Baška's long town beach shelves gently, and Malinska and Njivice have shaded promenades and organised beaches close to the resort centres. Distances are short, parking is easy at most stays, and the airport is on the island, which helps with young children.
Are dogs allowed on beaches on Krk?
