Vrsi sits about five kilometres north-east of Nin and roughly 22 kilometres from Zadar. The name comes from its position on a rise above the sea, and the village has been recorded since 1387. Today it is a small municipality of around 2,000 people with some 34 kilometres of indented coastline, so for a village of its size it has an unusual choice of beaches, from sand to pebble and rock, and plenty of room even in high summer.

Most visitors stay on the coast rather than in the old village on the hill. Mulo is the liveliest part: a promenade runs along the beach with restaurants, cafés, a playground and an outdoor gym, and at the small harbour local fishermen often sell their catch. Zukve, further along, is quieter, with holiday houses, a tourist information centre and the little early Christian Church of St James. West of Mulo, the Punta Velebit peninsula is covered in pine woods, good for walks and shade.

Vrsi suits families who like a beach with facilities nearby, and couples who prefer a calmer base than Nin with the option of an evening stroll by the sea. Most of our stays here are in Mulo, many with sea views and some right by the water. For long sandy beaches and kitesurfing, Nin's Queen's Beach and Ždrijac are a short drive away, and Ljubač Bay opens up just to the east.

Beaches

Mulo

The main village beach, running along the promenade. It is a mix of sand and fine pebbles with an easy entry into the sea, and everything is close: sunbed and umbrella hire, a small aquapark for children, a beach volleyball court, cafés and restaurants. It is the most sociable spot in Vrsi.

Ričina

The sandy one. The tourist board recommends it for families, with shallow, warm water that suits small children, two beach bars and pedalo, sunbed and umbrella hire. It gets lively in summer, so arrive early if you want a spot near the water.

Duboka Draga

A rocky cove at the end of a narrow inlet on the Ljubač side, about ten minutes' walk from the centre and also reachable by car. The water is very clear and the view of Velebit is the best in the village. There is a beach bar, but bring water shoes.

Zukve and Zečevo

Zukve has a sand-and-pebble beach below the Church of St James and a concrete section along the holiday settlement, with pedalo hire and a beach bar. Nearby Zečevo is a quiet spot that becomes an islet at high tide, when the sea fills the narrow Prizda passage.

Getting there and around

Zadar Airport is about 30 kilometres away by road. From Zadar, drive north to Nin and continue a few kilometres north-east to Vrsi. Coming down the A1 from the north, the Posedarje exit is often the more convenient way in. Local buses run to Zadar and the tourist board publishes the timetable, but a car is far more practical for beach-hopping, and most of our stays include parking.

Tips before you book

  • Pack water shoes for Duboka Draga and the rocky coves; Ričina is the beach for bare feet.
  • Shade on the beaches is limited, so bring an umbrella, or head to the pines of Punta Velebit.
  • Fresh fish is often sold at the small harbour in Mulo, handy if your apartment has a grill.
  • Mulo is the busiest part in the evenings; Zukve and the old village are quieter.

Frequently asked questions

Does Vrsi have sandy beaches?

Some. Ričina is a sandy beach with shallow water, and Mulo is a mix of sand and fine pebbles. Other beaches, such as Duboka Draga and Kukinica, are rocky coves with very clear water. For long stretches of pure sand, the beaches of Nin are about five kilometres away.

Is Vrsi good for families with children?

Yes. Ričina has shallow, warm water and beach bars, and Mulo adds a promenade, playground, small aquapark and restaurants right by the sea. Most of our stays are in Mulo, so many families can walk to the beach. Evenings are relaxed rather than loud.

What is the difference between Vrsi and Mulo?

Vrsi is the municipality and the old village on the hill; Mulo is its seaside part, with the promenade, harbour and main beach. Zukve is another coastal part, quieter and mostly holiday homes. Listings may say Vrsi, Vrsi–Mulo or Zukve, but they are all within a few minutes of each other.

How far is Vrsi from Nin and Zadar?

Nin is about five kilometres away, a few minutes by car, which makes its old town, salt works and the Queen's Beach easy outings. Zadar is roughly 22 kilometres south, usually around half an hour's drive, and the airport is about 30 kilometres away.
