Advent in Zagreb and around
Lights in the parks, music on the squares and the smell of mulled wine across the city centre. In November 2026, European Best Destinations named Zagreb the Best Christmas City Break in Europe. Here is how to plan your visit, and which towns nearby are worth a trip.

Why Zagreb?
The title comes from the European Best Destinations vote, with more than 10,000 votes, announced at the World Travel Market in London. It covers everything the city offers in December, not one event. Zagreb's Advent had already been voted Europe's best Christmas market three years running, from 2016 to 2018.
On 4 November 2026 the detailed programme had not yet been published. Before you go, check concerts and opening hours on the official Advent Zagreb site.
The best Advent locations in Zagreb
The city's 2026 call for organisers names the first eight locations below. The others have been popular in recent years, so check that they are on this year's programme.
Ban Jelačić Square
The main square and the natural starting point, with a stage and stalls.
Zrinjevac
The park that defines Zagreb's Advent: lights in the old plane trees, wooden huts and the music pavilion.
European Square
Just east of the main square, with food stalls and live music.
Strossmayer Square
Next to Zrinjevac. In recent years it has hosted Fuliranje, with DJs and food from city chefs.
King Tomislav Square
The ice rink in front of the Art Pavilion, the prettiest skating spot in town.
Strossmayer Promenade
Upper Town walkway with city views, stalls and music on both its east and west sides.
Gradec Plateau
Also in the Upper Town, with a view over the rooftops. Reach it on foot or by funicular.
Kvaternik Square
East of the centre, with more of a neighbourhood feel than the main squares.
Grič Tunnel
A former wartime tunnel between Mesnička and Radićeva streets, used for light installations in past seasons.
Ribnjak Park
In past seasons a Christmas market with music and a food court, near the cathedral.
Kaptol
A live Nativity scene beside the cathedral has been held here in past seasons.

An evening route on foot
- Start at dusk on Ban Jelačić Square and walk over to European Square for the first mulled wine.
- Walk south to Zrinjevac, continue through Strossmayer Square and on to the rink on King Tomislav Square. The three squares of the Green Horseshoe run in a line.
- Walk north to Ilica and take the funicular to the Upper Town for the Strossmayer Promenade and the lights of the city from above.
- Come down through the Stone Gate to Tkalčićeva for dinner, or finish at the cathedral on Kaptol.

What to eat and drink
Look for mulled wine (kuhano vino), fritule (small doughnuts), štrukli (baked cheese pastry), sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls), krpice sa zeljem (pasta with cabbage), grilled sausages, strudel and roasted chestnuts. Some locations sell a keepsake mug. Stalls change every year, so we do not quote prices.

Advent around Zagreb
If you stay more than two days, the towns nearby are smaller, less crowded and easy to visit in an afternoon. Unless a date is given for 2026, details come from the 2025 season, so check with the town before you travel.
Samobor
About half an hour west. Advent centres on King Tomislav Square, with concerts, an ice rink and lights in a pretty small town. Try the famous kremšnita (custard slice). Last season: 28 November to 1 January; 2026 dates not yet announced.
Velika Gorica
Right by the airport. Last season, the park in the town centre had lights, an ice rink, a Christmas village, a panoramic wheel and children's programmes.
Zaprešić
North-west of Zagreb, with a programme known as the “Sweetest Advent”: wooden huts, choirs and family days.
Jastrebarsko
Last season's winter programme included evening concerts and children's plays, with events in the park of Erdödy Castle.
Karlovac
About 56 km south-west, on the way to Plitvice and the coast. Last season it ran from 29 November to 1 January, with Advent on the promenade from 12 December. 2026 dates not yet announced.
Varaždin
About 81 km north-east, in a baroque old town. Confirmed for 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, and a good choice for a full day trip.
Krapina and Zagorje
North of Zagreb, with concerts, workshops, children's events and the Krapina Honey Fair. Marija Bistrica, the national shrine, also holds Advent events.

Practical tips
- Go on a weekday if you can. Friday and Saturday evenings are the busiest.
- Dress for the cold. Evenings are often around freezing, and you will be outside for hours.
- Leave the car behind. The centre has paid zones and heavy traffic in December. Walk or take the tram.
- From the airport, take the shuttle bus to the main bus station or city bus 290 to Kvaternikov trg, then a tram.
- Book early. Well-located stays for December weekends tend to go first.
Where to stay for Advent
For Advent, the Lower Town is the most practical base, as you can walk to almost every location. The Upper Town is the most atmospheric but has few stays. For easier parking, look at Maksimir or Novi Zagreb and take the tram in. Our Zagreb guide compares the neighbourhoods and shows stays from our partners.
