A pool is not essential on a coast with shallow sandy bays, but around Zadar it can make a long family stay a lot easier, particularly on windy or crowded days.

Because those bays have little shade, the wind that draws kitesurfers can make them choppy, and in July and August they are busy. A pool at the house lets younger children swim after lunch while you stay in the shade, and gives everyone somewhere to cool off in the evening. Around the city and in the villages to the north-west, where the shore is mostly pebble and concrete, a pool also gives non-swimmers a gentler option.
Our pool stays are spread along the riviera rather than clustered in one place. Privlaka has the largest share, often in modern family houses a short walk from its sandy bays. Sukošan, south of the city and close to the airport, is another good area, as are the outskirts of Zadar, the Sabunike area and Vrsi near Nin. You will also find the odd holiday home with a pool in the villages a few kilometres inland, where you get more space and a quieter setting in exchange for a short drive to the sea.
As anywhere, check whether the pool is private or shared with other apartments in the same house, how large it is and whether it is fenced. Pool stays on this coast are far fewer than those without, so if a pool is a firm requirement, filter for it from the start and book early for the summer holidays. Heating is not standard, so ask about water temperature if you are travelling in June or September. Look at the photos for sunbeds and shade around the pool, and check that it is not overlooked if privacy matters.
