Pet-friendly stays on the Zadar riviera
Travelling with a dog around Zadar works best if you stay outside the city, near the villages that have set aside space for dogs on their beaches.
Search pet-friendly stays near ZadarZadar city is not the easiest place to swim with a dog. The city opened two small dog zones, on the islet of Sveti Klement at the end of Punta Bajlo and behind the old Ledana building at Foša, but both were closed after complaints and vandalism, and the city has said it will look to locations outside town instead. Dogs are still commonly seen on Sveti Klement, but there is no marked area or facilities. Plan your dog's swims along the riviera instead.
The best-known option is in Privlaka, at a spot called Kažin, just before the bridge to Vir. The municipality set it up after requests from locals and visitors: it is over a hundred metres long, fenced, with parking and an access path. Near Nin, the Zaton holiday resort has a dog area on its main beach where dogs cannot go into the water, and a separate dog beach near the harbour where they can. Local reporting also lists dog-friendly beaches in Vrsi and Ražanac, north of Nin, among other villages in Zadar County.
Summer heat is the other thing to plan for. The sandy bays around Nin and Privlaka have little shade, so early mornings and evenings are the best times for walks and swims. If you take a ferry to Ugljan, Pašman or Dugi Otok, Jadrolinija requires dogs to wear a muzzle and be on a lead, and larger dogs travel on the open deck. From another EU country, your dog needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination and an EU pet passport.

- Ask the host about size limits, extra charges and whether the garden is fully fenced.
- Bring shade and fresh water for the beach; sandy bays here have very little natural cover.
