Vir is flat, small and ringed by coves, so staying close to the water is easier here than almost anywhere on the coast. Many of our stays on the island are within a short walk of a beach.

This is where you get the island's long beach, with a pebble shoreline and a sandy seabed that slopes gently, which is ideal for small children. Being close to Jadro also puts you near bakeries, shops and the evening promenade, and saves you from the paid car parks that fill quickly in August. Expect a lively, family atmosphere in high season rather than peace and quiet.
If you prefer a calmer setting, look at Lozice in the north-west, where the pebble beach is known for very clear water, or Kozjak, where the beach mixes sand, stone and concrete beside the ruins of the Kaštelina fortress. Pedinka in the south-west has only a handful of stays, but they sit next to a pine wood that gives welcome afternoon shade. Around the island there are many smaller coves too, some with concrete platforms and others completely natural. Natural shade is limited on most of them, so a parasol is worth packing.
A stay within 200 metres of the sea is not always on the beach itself. In the villages, a narrow road or a row of houses may stand between you and the water, and the nearest spot may be a small cove rather than a full beach. Look at the map to see which beach is closest and check what the shore is like there: sandy seabed, pebble or rock makes a real difference with toddlers. It is also worth confirming that parking comes with the stay.
