Stays near sandy beaches in Istria
Sand is scarce in Istria, so it pays to know exactly where it is. Two areas stand out: Medulin in the south and the resort beaches just outside Umag in the north-west.
Search stays near sand in IstriaMost of Istria's shoreline is pebble, rock or smooth paved platforms, which is why the water is so clear. The one sandy beach that everyone mentions is Bijeca in Medulin. It runs for more than a kilometre, the sea deepens very slowly, and there are sunbeds, parasols and a water slide for children in season, with shady trees behind the beach. It is the obvious base for families with toddlers, and it fills up accordingly in July and August, so a stay within walking distance saves you the daily hunt for parking.
In the north-west, Umag has two small sandy beaches outside the town centre. Osmica, at the Stella Maris resort about two kilometres from the centre, is a sandy beach roughly 230 metres long with very shallow water. Glavna beach at the Punta resort, closer to town, is shorter but also sandy and gentle. Around them the coast returns to pebble and rock, so check the walking distance from any stay to these particular beaches rather than to the sea in general.
Elsewhere, sand comes in small doses. Cape Kamenjak, south of Medulin, has a few small sandy patches among its rocky coves, and several resort beaches mix pebble with sandier sections. If sand is a must for you, focus on Medulin and Umag; if it is simply nice to have, the rest of Istria rewards you with very clear water; just pack a pair of water shoes. Many of the resort beaches, sandy or not, charge for sunbeds and parasols, while the natural coves at Kamenjak have almost no facilities, so bring water and shade.
