Stays a few steps from the water are a small share of what Istria offers, so it helps to know where they are and what kind of shore you will be walking down to.

The stays we list within 200 metres of a beach are concentrated in a few places: around Umag in the north-west, in Rabac and the Labin area on the east coast, in and around Rovinj, and on the Pula coast. Because there are relatively few of them, they are among the first to be booked for July and August, and it is worth deciding early if waking up by the sea is the point of your trip.
The shore differs a lot between these areas. Around Umag and Novigrad the coast is low, with pebble, rock and a couple of small sandy beaches. Rovinj's swimming spots are pebble, rock and smooth concrete platforms, with the coves towards Lone Bay and the Golden Cape forest park a pleasant walk away. Rabac sits in steep green bays with pebble beaches such as Girandella and Maslinica, and in Pula the Verudela and Stoja peninsulas mix pebble coves with rocky ledges.
Close to the beach does not always mean an easy walk. In Rabac, 200 metres can include a steep street or a flight of steps, and on the Pula coast you may cross a road or walk down to the rocks rather than onto a beach. Look at the map and the photos to see what lies between the door and the water. Remember too that places right by popular beaches can be lively into the evening in high season.
How close to the beach?
- Under 250 m A couple of minutes on foot. Easiest with small children, beach bags and a midday break back at the apartment.
- 250–500 m Roughly a five-minute walk. Still an easy daily routine, often in quieter streets a little back from the shore.
- 500 m – 1 km A ten-to-fifteen-minute walk, or a short drive. The widest choice of places to stay.

- Filter for beachfront first and book early: Istria has fewer of these stays than most Croatian regions.
- Check the route to the sea on the map, especially in Rabac, where the streets are steep.
- Look at what kind of shore is nearby: pebble, rock, paved platforms or sand make a difference with children.
- Confirm parking; spaces near the beach are in high demand and paid in the busier towns.
