Split is one of the few Dalmatian cities with sand on its doorstep. Bačvice and Firule sit just east of the old town, and Stobreč has a sandy bay a short ride away.

The bay is very shallow, so the water warms up quickly, and it is where locals play picigin, the game of keeping a small ball in the air while splashing through the shallows. It is busy, sociable and not quiet in the evenings, because Bačvice is also the heart of the city's bar and club scene. Most of our stays near sand are in the neighbourhoods around it, which means you can walk to the beach in the morning and to the Riva for dinner.
A little further east, Firule is a smaller bay of fine sand, naturally sheltered and a favourite with parents of young children. It is calmer than Bačvice and about a quarter of an hour on foot from the old town along the seafront. Between the two lies Ovčice, which is pebble with deeper water, and further out, Žnjan, Trstenik and Kašjuni under Marjan are pebble too, so do not assume every beach in Split is sandy. Firule is the more relaxed choice for families.
South-east of the city, Stobreč has a spacious sandy beach in the centre of the village, with shallow, warm water that suits families, and a pebble beach by the mouth of the Žrnovnica river. Stobreč feels like a small resort, parking is easier than in town, and buses run into the centre. If sand matters most and you have a car, it is a relaxed alternative to the city. The walk from Stobreč's sandy beach to its pebble beach by the river is short, so you can mix both in a day.

Tips before you book
- Stay in the Bačvice or Firule neighbourhoods to walk to sand; the old town is also within walking distance.
- Choose Firule over Bačvice with toddlers: it is calmer and more sheltered.
- Avoid stays right above Bačvice if you want early nights, as the bar and club scene there runs late.
