Inside the city walls you are close to the sea but rarely to a beach. For a stay by the water, look to Lapad or to the calmer villages along the Dubrovnik riviera.

The old town is surrounded by walls and rocks, and Ploče and Pile sit above the sea rather than beside it. Within the city, Lapad is the neighbourhood where the water is closest to hand: its promenade leads to Sunset beach, the city's largest, with fine pebble and sand and a gentle slope, and on to the rocky spots and Copacabana beach at Babin Kuk. Buses run frequently into Pile, so you can combine beach days with evenings in the old town.
Most of our beachfront stays are along the riviera. To the north, Slano sits on a large, sheltered bay with sand and pebble beaches, pine trees and olive groves; Grgurići, its main pebble beach, has showers and a children's playground nearby. Slađenovići is further along the same coast. South of the city, Cavtat is ringed by a promenade with small concrete platforms and flat rocks around its wooded peninsula, and Rat beach has small pebbles and shingle with an easy entry. Mlini and Molunat, near the southern tip of Croatia, are small and quiet.
The coast around Dubrovnik is steep, so check how you get from the door to the water. In Slano and Cavtat it is often a gentle stroll, while elsewhere 200 metres can include steps. If you are driving, confirm that parking is included, since spaces near the old town are limited and require a permit or a booking. Stays right on a busy promenade, as in Lapad or Cavtat, can also hear evening strollers and restaurant terraces in high season, so ask the host how quiet the rooms are if you are a light sleeper.
How close to the beach?
- Under 250 m A couple of minutes on foot. Easiest with small children, beach bags and a midday break back at the apartment.
- 250–500 m Roughly a five-minute walk. Still an easy daily routine, often in quieter streets a little back from the shore.
- 500 m – 1 km A ten-to-fifteen-minute walk, or a short drive. The widest choice of places to stay.
